$110,000 - Emotional Support Program and Services
hile
combination drug therapies in recent years have shown great
promise in the treatment of those with HIV/AIDS, it benefits
primarily those who can tolerate
the medication regimen, toxicity, and expense. There
are many others, particularly in low income brackets, who
are unable to benefit from these new treatments. In
addition, the rate of infection continues to increase,
particularly in the low-income communities which have
greater difficulty accessing services.
John XXIII is on the front lines daily assisting HIV/AIDS
patients in Monterey and San Benito counties, and their
families. With its grant from Hospice Foundation this
year, John XXIII is providing a variety of emotional and
spiritual support services.
A little encouragement from a friendly visitor in the
Face-to-Face program can give a John XXIII client a renewed
sense of self-worth. Making new friends through the
Grief and Growth Support Group can alleviate feelings of
isolation. Engaging in conversations with a
professional therapist in the CATS program can help someone
work through stress and relationship issues.
These kinds of support services can make a huge difference
in the quality of life for people living with HIV/AIDS.
They help provide a compassionate continuum of care and
comfort for people who are grappling with this disease.
