Read The Story Behind the Golf Scramble:
In 1982, three local
golfers and friends spearheaded and launched the first Golf
Scramble to raise funds to support hospice care on the
Monterey Peninsula. Inspired by their love of golf and the
need to support the availability of hospice care for people
at the end of life, Chuck Pius, J. Daniel Tibbitts, and
Verle Bogue brought together other friends, family and
business associates for a fun day of golf and celebration at
Carmel Valley Ranch Golf Resort.
Since then, the Golf Scramble has raised a total of more
than $2 million, in 2006 raising $198,000 net alone.
(Results for 2007 not yet in.) It moved to Quail Lodge Golf Resort in 2000 and is today
considered to be one of the premier fundraising golf
tournaments on the Central Coast.
Only Dan Tibbitts remains of the original group, following
the deaths of Chuck Pius in 1995 and Verle Bogue in 2004.
While Dan still remains involved in the planning, the
memories of the other men still live on in the tournament. A
special award category called The Pius Cup was created back
in 1995, and one of the four tournament flights is named in
Verle's memory. In 2000, Dan Tibbitts was presented
with The Helen Westland Award for his leadership throughout
the years in fundraising.
Tournament Earmarks Proceeds
Typically selling out months in advance, this tournament
attracts business and community leaders from the Central
Coast and throughout California. This year for the Silver
Anniversary, the tournament will have 200 players and the
committee, co-chaired by Peter Butler II and Bill Hogan, has
set a goal of raising $300,000 net. These proceeds will be
specially earmarked to benefit one of Hospice Foundation's
grantees--Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula's
hospice program, Hospice of the Central Coast.
Tournament Play
Teams of fivesomes make up the field of players in the
Scramble. First and second place teams with the best net
score in each of four flights are awarded prizes. Low net
winners are listed on The Pius Cup. Prizes are also awarded
for closest to the pin, longest drive, and hole-in-one.
