One of the most successful benefit golfing events on the Monterey Peninsula, the 22nd Annual Hospice Foundation Golf Scramble will be Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2004 at Quail Lodge Resort & Golf Club in Carmel Valley, California.

Designed by Robert Muir Graves, the Quail golf course features challenging fairways alongside the Carmel River and 10 picturesque lakes. Quail has been the long-time home of the California Women's Amateur Championship and formerly the Spaulding Golf Tournament.

The popularity of the Golf Scramble has steadily increased with the field selling out well in advance the last seven years. The 2003 event netted $143,000 for local hospice and other end-of-life care services in Monterey and San Benito counties.

Teams of fivesomes will make up the field of 160 players in the Scramble, a format which has players moving up after each stroke to the ball with their team's best lie. Engraved prizes will be awarded to the team with the best net score in each of the four flights. Team member names are listed on the Pius Cup, a perpetual trophy named in memory of the late Chuck Pius, a former chair of the Golf Scramble. Prizes are also awarded for closest to the pin and longest drive. A new Lexus, courtesy of Lexus Monterey Peninsula, is the grand prize for a hole-in-one on a specified hole at Quail. A hosted cocktail party at the lodge, a sumptuous banquet, and a lively auction follow the day's play.

Green fees are $350 per person and include a generous buffet lunch, cart, course play and refreshments, banquet, and chances for prize drawings. Players' guests may attend the banquet for $65. As seating is limited, reservations for guests must be made when registering to play in the Scramble, or by calling (831) 333-9023, ext. 13.
