Hospice Foundation is a nonprofit, public philanthropy that encourages excellence in hospice care and other compassionate programs of care for people facing a life-threatening illness, as well as services for their families. Support from the Hospice Foundation helps hospice care providers close the gap between decreasing health care reimbursement from insurance payers, such as Medicare, and the cost to provide this specialized, highly personal form of care for all families who need it Monterey and San Benito counties.

With the funds raised from various activities throughout the year and from its investment programs, Hospice Foundation makes grants to nonprofit providers of hospice and other types of care. These grants help strengthen the quality of life for those who are facing life-threatening illness. Providers must meet certain standards of excellence as well as other criteria in serving the community. Grants help support existing programs to ensure they remain available and are accessible to patients and their families, and are of high quality. Grants also help providers develop new services for underserved areas of Monterey and San Benito counties, or underserved populations to ensure that hospice care is available to all of those who need it today, tomorrow and for future generations. Throughout the year, the Hospice Foundation participates in or hosts a variety of seminars or forums, publishes newsletters and other materials, and conducts promotional and other outreach activities.

In 2000, Hospice Foundation helped convene the Compassionate Care Alliance of Monterey County, bringing together 125 local agencies and organizations to help raise the public's dialogue about end-of-life care issues, choices and planning through outreach and education. The coalition is subdivided into nine task forces, each focusing on a separate constituency in the community. Raising awareness will help ensure that more people find and have access to compassionate, quality care at the end of life.

These community education activities combine to educate the community about the benefits of hospice care as a dignified, compassionate approach to caring for patients who have a life-threatening illness, as well as how it addresses the needs of their families. These activities also help keep Hospice Foundation donors informed about how vital their gifts are to ensuring the availability of hospice care for years to come in Monterey and San Benito counties.
